377,745. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing. KIMPTON, W. H., of British Celanese, Spondon, near Derby, and BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London. May 4, 1931, No. 13042. [Class 80 (ii).] Variable speed-gearing suitable for driving pumps in the spinning of artificial filaments comprises two epicyclic trains with auxiliary positive trains. The planet carrier C<1> of the first epicyclic train is driven from the main driving-shaft A, and the planet carrier Fl of the other drives the main driven shaft H. On the projecting ends Y<2>, X<2> of shafts D<2>, E<2> secured to sun gears 1, 1<1> are secured spur gears T<1>, T<2> of an auxiliary train T<1>, S, T<2>. The. projecting ends Y<1>, X<1> of shafts D<1>, El of the other sun gears 3, 3<1> are adapted to be connected by a different spur train (not shown). Brake drums Z<1> .. Z<4> are fast on the shafts D<1>, E<1>, D<2>, E<2> respectively. In order to change the speed of the pump, a pair of drums such as Z<1>, Z<2> are held fast by suitable frictional or positive means. The toothed train connecting the shaft ends Y<1>, X<1> is removed, as shown. The pump is still driven positively through both epicyclic trains and the remaining auxiliary train T<1>, S, T<2>. Toothed gears of changed ratio are then affixed to connect the shaft ends Y<1>, Xl. Three different speeds result from any one setting according as drum Z<1> or drum Z<3> or no drum is held.
