373,867. Photo-electric cells. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, 13D, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Aug. 25, 1931, No. 23883. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1930. Addition to 343,930. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i).] A photo-electric electrode consists of a photoelectric metal such as an alkali metal supported on a layer containing (a) particles of the metal, (b) particles of another conducting material such as silver, and (c) particles of an oxide of the photo-electric metal. Air is admitted to a cell containing a layer of silver on the inner surface and a discharge is passed between an electrode and the layer so as to oxidize the surface of the layer. The cell is evacuated, caesium in excess is admitted, and the cell heated to 200‹ C. so that silver oxide is reduced and caesium oxide formed. The cell is heated subsequently to 100‹ C. to cause caesium to penetrate into the mixture of silver and caesium oxide, and caesium is deposited on this layer. Excess caesium may be removed by a pump or by finely divided carbon, lead oxide or by the provision of a lead glass stem to the envelope. Barium may be used instead of caesium.
