Abstract
396,348. Photo-electric cells. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, 13D, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. April 25, 1933, No. 12089. Convention date, July 22, 1932. [Class 39 (i).] In the preparation of an alkali metal electrode, excess of alkali metal is removed by providing one or more metals in the cell, outside the photoelectric electrode, and capable of forming an alloy with the excess metal at temperatures below 150‹ C. ; the metals may be (a) in group II B, zinc, cadmium, or mercury or (b) in Group IV B, tin, lead, or germanium. As shown, the anode consists of a hairpin wire 4, and the cathode consists of a layer of silver coated with silver oxide to which a thin layer of caesium 9 is applied. A piece of tin 11 is .secured to a wire 10 sealed in the pinch, or the stem tube 3 may be coated with tin before sealing into the bulb. Mercury may be used in the form of an amalgam such as non-liquid cadmium amalgam.
