Abstract
632,962. Cathode materials. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. May 6, 1947, No. 12238. Convention date, Dec. 15, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] The cathode of a photoelectric cell is constituted by an alloy of one or more of the elements arsenic, antimony and bismuth with an alkali metal, the alloy being applied to an iron substratum which is preferably oxidized before the alloy is applied. The cathode may be formed by arranging within the envelope an iron helix 4 and a tungsten helix 5 coated with a layer of antimony. After exhaustion the helix 4 is heated so that it volatilizes and the wall of the cell is coated with a transparent film of iron. Oxygen is introduced through tube 7 up to a pressure of 50 mms. of mercury, after which a glow discharge is maintained for two minutes between the helix 4 as anode and the wall as cathode, current leads 6 being provided for the wall. The bulb is then exhausted, the antimony volatilized by heating helix 5, and caesium introduced through tube 8.
