Abstract
371,579. Brakes. NATIONAL SUPPLY CORPORATION, 120, Broadway, New York, U.S.A. April 8, 1931, No. 10350. Convention date, March 2, 1931. [Class 103 (i).] In a brake for the drum of a draw-works for well drilling comprising a pair of spaced brake bands 3, the dead ends of which are connected to a pivoted, horizontal equalizerbar 22, means are provided at the opposite ends of the equalizer-bar to maintain it in initial balance. The bar 22 is mounted on a fixed pivot 23 on the baseplate 8 and is yieldably held in a horizontal position by springs 32 in sleeves 30 passing through eyes in the ends of the bar, engaging the bar by means of shoulders 35 and adjustably connected to the ends of the bands by bolts 29. Pivoted locking- dogs 38 engage hexagonal heads 37 of the sleeves 30 to hold them in adjusted position. Shoulders 40 on the sleeves engage fixed brackets 31 should part of the brake or equalizer fail and thus still allows one or both brakes to be applied. The live ends of the bands are connected to levers on a brake-actuating shaft 6, Fig. 4, operated by a shaft 11 and a lever 9, Fig. 1, by means'of bifurcated levers 13, 14 connected by a curved link 15, which provides a gradually increasing compound leverage producing first a quick application and then increased leverage, also the entire brake bands are adapted to be instantly released.
