The plate, for reasons hereinafter explained, isformed in a main section 2 2 and auxiliary sections 23 bolted to the main section at the ends thereof, as indicated at 24, and bearing the flanges 20. At its opposite ends and at what might be termed its front edge, the plate is provided with pairs of bearings 25 receiving opposite ends of a longitudinally extending operating shaft 26. This shaft is held against longitudinal movement by means of collars 27 orthe like and at its center has secured thereto an arm 28, the outer end of which is furcate and has the arms 29 thereof bridged by a pivot pin 30. One end of this shaft has an operating lever 31 corresponding to the ordinary brake lever of such apparatus.
Mounted upon the pin 30 is a link 32, the opposite end of which engages a horizontal pin 33 vcarried by a longitudinally extending equalizing bar 34. The connections of the link 32 to the pins 30, 33 are sufficiently loose toV permit oscillation of the equalizing bar within the necessary limits. These bars, adjacent their ends, pass through eyes 35 constructed to prevent vertical elevation of the bar while permitting a limited shifting movement of the bar transversely of the plate. The extreme ends of the bar have rearwardly directed apertured ears receiving horizontal pivot pins 36. Immediately rearwardly of the bearings 25 are pairs of spaced apertured ears 37 receiving the ends of securing and pivot `pins 38 upon which are mounted brake band clips 39 to which the fixed ends of the bands 16 are secured. 'Ihe opposite ends of the bands have clips 4() provided with lugs 41 having a bore 42 extending in the general direction of the band. Withinthese lugs are rotatably mounted nuts 43 which project at the rear ends of the lugs and are squared, as at 44, for arrangement by a wrench.
Directed through the nuts are eye bolts 45, the eyes 46 of which are received by the pins 36. Lock nuts 47 engage opposite ends of the nuts 44 to secure adjusted positions of the eye bolts and these eye bolts in their engagement with the pins 36 have sufhcient play to admit of the oscillary movements of the equalizer bar 34. In installation of a device of this character, the main plate 22 is separated from the plates 23 and the clips 40 are disengaged from the eye bolts. The entire main plate 22 with the bands carried thereby canthen be inserted from the forward side of the draw works to proper position beneath the drum, when the plates 23 may be secured thereto and then the entire assemblage bolted in position. In securing this position, as hereinbefore set forth, the transverse position-is. determined by the flanges 20 and the longitudinal position may very readily be determined by passing the bands about the drums inthe grooves 15 thereof and connect- Ving them to their respective eye bolts, so that the assemblage is properly longitudinally positioned.
In operation of the device, a pull upon the lever 31 will be transmitted to the equalizer bar 34 and thereby to the movable ends of the brake bands, shifting them toward the fixed ends thereof. In event the movement at either end is excessive, the bar 34 engaging the forward wall of the yoke 35 will provide a xed pivotagainst which the link 22 may shift the bar to insure tightening of the band which is still in an operative condition. Therefore, if either of these bands break, the other band is still effective.
In restoring the bands to their released posit-ion. if either of the bands tend to stick, the bar 34 adjacent the opposite end thereof from that at which-the bands sticks will engage the forward wall of the associated yoke, again providing a fixed pivot about which the bar may be swung to insure release of the stuck band. In addition to performing the functions just described, these yokes serve to guide the bar in its movements and eliminate waste motion in the braking or releasing operations.
In combination with structure of this character, I provide front and rearward band stops 48 and 49 which are associated with the fixed and movable ends of each brake band respectively. Each stop comprises an attaching bracket 50 and an arcuately curved portion 51 confronting the outer face of the band and through which are extended adjustable set or stop screws 52. In releasing movements of the band. the movable end of the band, during initial disengagement, will. of course, be first shifted outwardly this shifting movement will result in its engagement by the set-screws 52 of the associated curved portion 51. ts outward movement thus limited, a further movement of its clip will cause a disengaging movement further about the periphery of the drum. The supports extend to points approximately 120 spaced about the bottom of the drum surface, with the result that the band, when in expanded condition. is squeezed between two braces, so that the upper portion thereof is held in properly spaced relation to the drum and does not drag thereon. If, at any time, a band becomes worn to such an extent that an adjustment is necessary,this is readily accomplished by simply rotating the nut 43 thereof.
Attention is directed to the fact that with a construction of this character, the adjacent ends of the bands closely approach one another, so that the waste or unused braking surface which, in most devices of this character, constitutes practically one-fourth of the available surface, is reduced substantially to a zero point.

In a ldraw works, the combination of a drum having brake flanges at its opposite ends, brake bands engaging the brake flanges, means anchoring corresponding ends of said brake bands, an equalizing bar connected to the opposite ends of said brake bands, means for lshifting said equalizing bar to tighten or loosen the bands, and stops disposed inward of the ends of the bar acting to limit shifting movements of opposite ends of the bar in either direction and providing spaced fulcrnms against which one or the other of the ends of the bar will bear in the event ofV excessive looseness or breakage of one or the other of the bands.
9. In combination with a drum having brake flanges at its opposite ends, brake bands, means anchoring corresponding ends of said brake bands, an equalizer bar connected to the opposite ends of said brake bands, means connected to the equalizer bar to shift it to thereby tighten or loosen the bands, and yokes disposed inward of the ends of the bands and through which the bar passes, said yokes limiting the forward and rearward movement of the bar and also acting as fulcrums in case one or the other of the brake bands becomes excessively loosened or breaks.
10. In combination with a drum having brake flanges at its opposite ends, brake bands surrounding the flanges, means anchoring corresponding ends of said brake bands, an equalizer bar connected to the opposite ends of said brake bands, means for shifting the equalizer bar to tighten or loosen the bands, and elements limiting the rearward movement of the bar and disposed adjacent the ends thereof and against which the edge of the bar bears when the bar is fully retracted, said elements in case one or the other of the bands becomes loosened or breaks, acting as fulcrums as and for the purpose stated.
l1.A A' brake band supporting unit for use with a drum having brake flanges and brake bands surrounding the flanges, the unit comprising a plate having a depending flange at its real` edge, the plate and flange being adapted to engage upon and against a sill, said plate having portions projecting in either direction and carryingbearings, a brake actuating shaft mounted upon said bearings,
means mounted upon said plate adjacent said bearings for engaging one end of each of the brake bands, an equalizer bar disposed upon said plate, and having means whereby it may be operatively connected to the other Y end of each brake band, the shaft having an arm, a link connecting said arm to the equalizer bar, the plate having yokes extending over the bar and permitting a limited movement of the bar and holding the bar to the pla-te, members mounted at opposite ends of the plate beyond said brake band engaging meansV on the bar and plate, said-members extending upwardly approximately concentric to the brake flanges and brake bands, said members having adjustable means extending through them for engaging the outer surfaces of the brake bands forward and rearward of vthe drum to thus support the brake bands in concentric relation to the brake flanges.

In a draw works, a drum having a brake flange, a band brake extending around said flange, the two ends of the brake being disposed substantially in alinement with each other beneath the drum, means for anchoring one end of the brake band, the free end of the brake band having an eye disposed in approximately horizontal alinement with said anchoring means, a brake lever having an arm` an operative connection between the arm and the eye including a bolt operatively engaged with the arm and extending through the eye and a nut on opposite ends of the eye and'engaging said bolt whereby the free end of the brake band may be adjusted.
13. Inv a draw works` a drum, a brake flange, a brake band extending around the flange, a plate disposed beneath the drum,
lmeans for anchoring one end of the brake band to said plate, a shaft mounted upon the plate and having anl arm, a link extending from the arm and operatively connected Yto the free end of the brake band, and front and rear band stops, associated with the xed and movable ends of the brake band, said stops limiting the downward movement of the brake band with reference to the drum when the brake band is released to thus hold the upper portion of the' brake band'inspaced relation to the drum when the brake band is released. i
