ment of the threaded thrust nut the drum will be forced laterally into wedging engagement with the tapered friction blocks, thus clutching the frame to the gear wheel 15. 'The'flange 26 is provided with a hearing sleeve 27. Between the flange l8 and the hub of the gear wheel 15 which drives the drum is a spring 28 which is adapted to force the drum laterally in order to release it from the wooden friction blocks when the thrust nut is turned to the left. \Vhen the wooden friction blocks wear, the thrust nut may be moved farther out on its threaded bearing and the adjustable clamp 24: for the clutch lever may then be adjusted to the proper position so that the operating lever may be in the desired position of convenience for the operator.
Projecting laterally from the flange 18 is a circumferential flange 29 against the outer surface of which is adapted to bear a suitable brake band 30, which is adapted to be contracted to apply a braking pressure to the drum by means of hell crank 30 connected to a foot lever 31. lVhen it is desired to connect the winch drum with the power of the engine to lift and lower or otherwise utilze power, the clutch lever is turned so as to move the thrust nut against the drum and carry-the latter laterally into driving frictional engagement with the wooden friction blocks. To sto the rotation of the drum and to hold a lifted load suspended or maintain the strain on the operating cable that may be applied to the drum, the brake is applied to the drum by the foot lever and the clutchithrown out and the load held stationary or gradually lowered by controlling the extent of the brakii action against the drum.
' %)n the left hand drum flange 26 is attached a ratchet 32 adapted to be engaged by a pawl 33 fixed to the frame whereby the drum may also be held in any desired position if both the clutch and brake have been released.
,While the construction just described is illustrative of an arrangement in which only one Winch or drum is employed, the particular form of winch supporting frame and arrangement of the driving gears is such that an auxiliary and interchangeable upper drum may be utilized and the drawings show this auxiliary drum. In this arrangement, is the auxiliary drum which i is adapted to be mounted on an auxiliary frame comprising upright side members 35, each of which is mounted on a corresponding side frame member 2 of the main winch frame, the latter side members being preferably composed of angle irons to suitably support the auxiliary side frame members, the two frames being secured together by means of bolts 37. This auxiliary drum is provided with a driving gear wheel 38 adapted to engage the gear wheel '15 and it is also adapted to be irovidcd with friction drive blocks and with a thrust nut similar to that described with reference to the main drum. adapted to control this thrust nut. A foot brake lever 40 is also provided for the upper drum and is adapted to control the operation of a brake for the latter through a rod il connected to bell crank 42 similarly to the construction described with respect to the lower drum. Details of these controllj'ng mechanisms are not specifically shown in the drawings since they are identical with those heretofore described with respect to the main drum.
lVhat we claim is:
The combination with a tractor having an axle housing, a winch attachment including a frame having forward supports on the axle housing, a draw bar, said frame having support at its rear end on the draw bar, a winch drum and its operating mechanism carried by said frame, a supplemental frame detachably connected to the first mentioned frame, an auxiliary drum carried by the supplemental frame, driving connections be tween the first mentioned drum and the tractor and driving connections between the two drums.
In testimony whereof we :iflix our signatures.
