Oct. 28, 1931, No. 29893. Convention date, Oct. 28 1930. [Class 123 (iii).] In a smoke-tube superheater for returntube boilers, the loop-tube elements 5 in the vertical and horizontal rows of smoke tubes 3 at the sides and top of the combustion chamber 2 extend into the combustion chamber and are formed with enlarged heat absorbing surfaces at the extended parts. The enlarged surfaces may consist of ribs 6 welded on the loops, the ribs and the loops of the side elements being arranged vertically and those of the top elements arranged horizontally. In place of the ribs, the loops may be bent back upon themselves to form double bends within the combustion chamber. The extended loop-tube elements are so connected to headers in the smoke box that the steam is directed in series through the extended elements and through elements arranged in the central smoke tubes and not extended into the combustion chamber. The extended parts of the elements may be made of molybdenum ste eland may be supported by angle-irons on the walls of the combustion chamber.
