Abstract
370,258. Stop valves. BROWN, J., 8, Kells Gardens, Low Fell, Gateshead, Co. Durham. June 11, 1931, No. 17027. [Class 135.] Leakage, preventing.- In valves operated by rotary non-reciprocating screwed spindles, particularly sluice valves on tank vessels carrying petrol, a cap or bonnet e encloses a hollow spindle head f and packing g disposed under a flange f<2> is arranged to be compressed by rotation of the head f in opening the valve whereby leakage of fumes by way of the gland b is prevented. For this purpose a nut k, prevented from rotating by fins k<1> and guides e<3>, moves up ,the screw f<5> as the spindle head f is rotated to open the valve until it abuts under a shoulder e<4> of the cap or bonnet and compresses the packing. The packing g is forced into a groove f<6> in the spindle head f and makes a close joint which persists when the valve is. closed or only partially open. The cap or bonnet and the spindle head are retained in assembly and wear provided for by a nut h which is adjusted to bear lightly on, or just to clear the flange<f>2; the adjustment is made secure by a pin engaging one of several notches h<1> in the depending rim of the nut h.
