Description

Jan. l()5 1933. a. N. REED 5T PLUG VALVE Filed April 29. 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR Patented Jan. 10, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT ori-ica ISAAC N. REED AND FRANCIS T. REED, F SHREVEE'ORT, LOUISIANA PLUG VALVE eppur-,anun ined Apru 29,
This invention relates to plug valves of the character requiring rotation of the valve member to open and close the valve and has for the primary object, the provision of means for conveniently rotating the valve member for the above stated purpose and at the same time imparting a sliding movement to said valve member Jfor the purpose of loosening or freeing the valve 'member from its seat when being opened and to assure firm seating of the valve member when being closed thereby obviating any possibility of leakage to occur.
Another object of this invention is the l5 provision of a single operating means for imparting both rotary and sliding movements to the valve member and which may be easily and quickly operated and capable of adjustment to permit the valve member to be adjusted relative to the seat, whereby wear maybe compensated for and assuring perfect operation of the valve over a long period of time.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a plug valve of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and efficient and which 'may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, this '3 invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of our invent-ion, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating a plug valve constructed in accordance with our invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
1931. Serial No. 533,765.
Figure 4 is a. fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a detail view illustrating the cam shaped groove for imparting the sliding movement to the valve member. 5u
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view illustrating the lugs fitting within the groove.
Figure 7 is a side elevation illustrating an adjusting nut.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the body of the valve having the ports 2 and valve seat 3 of tapered :formation to receive a valve member 4 of the plug type having a passage 5 therethrough adapted to be moved into and out of 69 registration with the ports 2. The plug 4 is of tapered formation and carries a stem 6 which extends outwardly of the body by way of the neck 7 and the latter is provided with a marginal attaching fiange 8. @5
A bonnet 9 is mounted on the body 1 and includes a tubular extension 10 fitting, with in the neck 7 of the body 1 and has formed thereon a ange 11 to rest on the iange 8. The flanges 8 and 11 have a gasket there- 79 between and are secured together by stud bolts 12. The tubular portion 10 has formed integral therewith a stuiiing box 13 slidably receiving the stem 6 and has packing 14 located therein. The packing 14 is adjusted 75 and retained Within the stuffing box 13 by a gland 15 provided with oppositely extending arms 16 and apertured to receive adjustable fasteners in the form of bolts 17 having nuts 18 threaded thereonand are also pivoted to the bonnet f) as shown at 19, thus it will be seen that the packing 14 may be placed under a desired pressure to establish a leak-proof connection between the stem and the bonnet and may be replaced by other packing when worn by removing the gland 13.
Spaced arms or supporting members 20 are formed integrally with the flange 11 or form a part of the bonnet and carry a housing 21 through which the stem 6 extends and has its opposite faces opened vto permit the operation of a segmental gear 22. The segmental gear is splined to the stem 6 and is held against endwise movement by the housing 21 and meshes with a Worm 23 of a worm shaft 24. The shaft 24 is journalled in bearings 25 carried by the bonnet or housing 2l thereof and has secured to one end a hand wheel 26.
A sleeve 27 is formed integral with the housing 2l and has removably mounted therein pins 28 adapted to fit in a cam shaped groove 29 formed in an adjusting member 30. The adjusting member extends into the sleeve 27 and is secured to the stem o so that when the stem 6 is rotated by the hand wheel 26, a sliding movement will be imparted to the valve member due to the cam shaped groove 29 moving relative to the pins 28. An adjusting nut 3l is threaded to the stem and is rotatably secured to the adjusting member 30 whereby the pluv 4 of the valve member may be adjusted reIat-ive to the seat 3.
The segmental gear 22 is adapted to be rotated in either direction by the hand Wheel 26 and is limited in its movement by a stop 3210- cated within the housing 2l. The cam groove 29 has its opposite Walls shaped to form angularly disposed faces for the pins 28 to engage. The cam faces are so arranged that the valve stem when rotated for opening and closing the valve, the stem will be given a sliding movement. During the rotation of the valve member to open the valve said valve member will receive first a sliding movement away from the seat and then toward the seat as the valve member reaches an open position and corresponding sliding movements to the valve member will be had when the latter-is moved from a valve opening position to a valve closing position. This particular operation renders the rotation of the valve member comparatively easy and assures tight engagement between the valve member and its seat when either in a valve opening position or a valve closing position.
lVhile We have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of our inventlon, as claimed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:
A. valve comprising an open body having ports, a tapered seat in the body, a'tapered valve member in the body engaging the seat .for controlling the ports.r a zn on the valve member and extending exit of thebody, a. receiving the is. between the ied by the f' in either 'Irving a cam a brumct closing the body f stem, adjustable pac f the stem,
