Abstract
369,832. Television. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, London.-(Assignees of Zworykin, V. K. ; 22, Merrick Villa, Collingswood, New Jersey, U.S.A.). July 9, 1931, No. 19798. Convention date, July 17, 1930. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii).] An electric image is formed from an optical image of the object to be transmitted and is scanned by cathode rays 44. The optical image is projected on a fine-mesh photoelectric cathode 11, which emits electrons 41, 43 proportionately to the illumination. These produce corresponding charges on insulated metallic inserts 15 in the anode 12. The opposite ends 16 of the inserts are scanned by a beam 44 of cathode rays which passes through a fine-mesh electrode at positive potential. The number of electrons 44a which reach the anode 13 in the neighbourhood 38 of each insert 15 varies with the charge on that insert and sets up a corresponding voltage across a resistance 25 in the grid circuit of an amplifying-valve 31 connected to a transmitter. The electrons which fall on the insert 15 discharge it by secondary emission to the screen 17. According to modifications, the mesh cathode 11 is replaced by a semitransparent photoelectric film on the inside of the cathode-ray tube 10 at its large end ; the electrodes 12, 13 are made of corrugated strips of nickel with their engaging edges spot-welded about the inserts, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown); the electrodes 12, 13 are combined in a single electrode, Fig. 9 (not shown).
