Abstract

368,883. Spray carburetters. EAMES, W. H. and MORGAN, W. L., 115, Nelson Road, Hornsey, London. Dec. 29, - 1930, No. 39006. [Class 7 (iii).] A carburetter which embodies the features described in Specification 191,099, [Class 7 (iii), Internal-combustion engines, Carburetting apparatus &c. for], comprises a fuel nozzle consisting of a central portion 8, surrounded by a tubular member 13, the annular space formed allowing air entering through holes 14 to pass by way of slots 11, over the fuel orifice which is controlled by a needle valve 12 carried by a tubular throttle valve 19, having ports 20 provided with a V notch 20a. The flow of fuel through orifice 7 to the nozzle 8 is controlled by apertures of different sizes in the periphery of a rotatable plug 25 which may be actuated by a graduated disc 28 or, through a universal joint, from a distance. Air inlet holes 22 in the casing 1 are adapted to be uncovered by the lower end of the throttle which is streamlined and carries a choke tube 24. According to the invention, (1) the tubular member 13 is provided at its upper end with a flanged portion 16 which may be slotted, as at 17, and serves as a baffle to facilitate mixing ; (2) the inner part 8 of the nozzle has a recess 9 which serves to hold a reserve of fuel to facilitate starting and accelerating; (3) the lower portion 2 of the casing has a chamber 2b to hold petrol that has overflowed, and may be provided with a drain cock ; (4) the flow of fuel to the nozzle is controlled by a needle valve 31b attached to a flexible diaphragm 31a which may be actuated manually through a Bowden cable 36a, or by suction, existing at the engine side of the throttle, through a tube 33. The opening through which the cable passes is rendered airtight, so as to preserve the partial vacuum, by a piece of rubber tubing 37 ; (5) extra air is admitted through holes adapted to be uncovered by a manually-actuated piston, the air being delivered to each outlet branch 21 of the carburetter ; (6) a ported sleeve 43 around the casing 1 is adapted to control the air inlet holes 22. The carburetter is primarily intended for use without float-feed apparatus, but such apparatus may be provided if desired.
