Convention date, Feb. 17, 1930. [Classes 20 (iv), 25, and 87 (i).] Masonry for chimney-stacks, reservoirs, towers, conduits, arches, walls, &c. consists of elements so shaped and assembled that the tensile stresses, both vertical and horizontal, to which the masonry is subjected are absorbed without subjecting the mortar to tensile stress. For example, swallow-tailed elements a may be assembled perpendicularly to each other, the interstices being filled with square or othershaped dowels c, d, e. The upper edges of the dowels may be bevelled so that wedges may be driven between them, and the elements a, or the upper edges of the dowels may be cut away to receive jointing material. The elements a and the dowels may be tongued and grooved. In a modification, the dowels are cast integrally with the elements a.
