367,140. Weighing-apparatus fitted to lifting-jacks, crane hooks, etc.; dynamometers. MICHELIN ET CIE, Clermont - Ferrand, Puy - de- Dome, France. Jan. 23, 1931, No. 2340. Convention date, March 7,1930. [Class 143.] Relates to a combined lifting or load-carrying and weighing or load-measuring apparatus and comprises in combination a lifting or load - carrying mechanism, a load-attachment or supporting member which is capable of substantial relative sidewise movement with respect to, and without contact with, the lifting or load-carrying mechanism, a spring interposed between the lifting or load-carrying mechanism and the load member and serving to constrict resiliently the relative sidewise movement therebetween, a load indicator for measuring the relative vertical movement as determined by the spring, and operating means for the indicator adapted to accommodate itself to the relative sidewise movements. As shown in connection with a lifting jack, Fig. 1, the vertical column 2 of the jack carries a cylindrical support 5 provided at its lower end with a flange 6. One end of a helical weighing spring 7 is secured to the flange and the other end is secured to a cap piece 10 carrying the indicating mechanism. When a load, for example a wheel axle, is raised the spring 7 is compressed and a lever 15 (maintained in contact with the column 2 by a spring 18) depresses a rack 16 and thereby rotates an indicating pointer 20 over a dial 23. The dial is secured by a spider 24 and screwed ring 25. A second pointer 29 rotated by a squared socket 28 may be set into coincidence with the pointer 20 so as to maintain the reading after the load has been removed. As applied to a crane coupling, Fig. 4, where the load is supported by a hook 41 secured to a spring-supported casing 10, the flanged cylinder 5 whereon the spring rests is carried by a suspension eye 43. A gap 421 around the suspension rod 42 permits relative lateral movement between the rod and the casing 10. The apparatus may be applied to the couplings between vehicles. Permanent records, apparatus for giving.- The indicating spindle 19, Fig. 3, may carry a plate 30 on which replaceable paper discs 31 may be secured by a flexible washer 32 and thumb-screw 33. A stop 37 operable by a press button 38 is adjustably carried on the casing 101. When the apparatus is fully loaded, the operator depresses the button and causes a mark to be made on the disc. The disc may be ungraduated in which case the load marked thereon is determined by means of a transparent scale.
