Abstract

850,949. Weighing apparatus. WOODALLDUCKKAM CONSTRUCTION CO. Ltd. Jan. 6, 1959 [Jan. 22, 1958], No. 2236/58. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XVIII] The load on a wheeled vehicle is measured by providing at least one wheel of the vehicle with a suspension system including a load sensitive device, which with insignificant change in its own dimensions, transmits to the body of the vehicle a force proportional to the load on the wheel and produces a corresponding signal whose value is indicated and/or recorded on the vehicle. The invention is described with reference to railed vehicles known as charging cars for overhead loading of furnaces and having a load cell, producing pressure changes in a liquid or resistance changes in either a carbon pile or a strain gauge attached to an elastic member, incorporated in the suspension of each wheel, the indicating means including means for integrating the signals from the load cells. The suspension device comprises a beam 9 on which the wheel is mounted in bearings 11 and which has one end pivoted to the body 1 of the vehicle, the other end acting on a load cell which is supported in a yoke 16 attached below the vehicle body. The motion of the free end of the beam is guided by means of a tension link 13 whose ends are supported from the vehicle body and whose centre is attached to the beam. In another form a charging car, of the type in which each running wheel is mounted on a spindle carrying a pair of outrigger wheels for engagement with a weighbridge, is adapted to embody the invention by mounting the spindle in twin bearings attached to the beam and providing a load cell between the outer face of each bearing and the vehicle body. The Provisional Specification includes a vehicle provided with hydraulic jacks which, when operated, take the load from the wheels and each having a load cell between itself and and vehicle body.
