Abstract
389,929. Jib cranes. MORT, A., 18, Yarborough Road, Lincoln. Dec. 17, 1931, No. 35020. [Class 78 (iv).] A safety-device for indicating when maximum safe-load is on the crane at any radius comprises a scale 12, Fig. 1, pivoted on the jib at 13 and connected by a link 14 with a fixed point 15 so as to move about its pivot when the jib is luffed, and a pointer 11 moved by the deflection of a spring 7 which is mounted between a collar 6 and an abutment 9 on the jib so as to be stressed by the load on the crane hook. The scale 12 may be graduated on the edge as well as the face and the pointer may extend over the edge. The pointer may carry a flexible spring which makes contact with a terminal on the scale to give an audible alarm. The scale may be graduated to show the radius by means of a second pointer fixed on the jib. In a modification, Fig. 2, the head-sheave 2 is mounted on a lever 17 pivoted on the jib at 18 and moved by the load in opposition to a spring 7, and the lever is connected with the pointer by a link 21. The moment of the force 22 due to the load about the point 18 varies with the inclination of the jib, and the pivot 15 of the link 14 is therefore placed nearer the jib-foot.
