378,881. Cranes ; dynamometers. SMITH & SONS (RODLEY), Ltd., T., SMITH, F. H., SMITH, W. T., and SMITH, G. E., Steam & Electric Crane Works, Rodley, near Leeds. May 12, 1931, Nos. 13985 and 24834. [Class 78 (iv).] A fluid-pressure cylinder and plunger is arranged to form an extensible link or anchorage for the luffing-rope or the jib-tie, so that fluid is displaced and operates indicating or signal devices when the safe load is reached or exceeded. As shown in Figs. 1 and 6, the luffing-rope 6 is connected at 27 to the oil cylinder 10, and the piston 28 in the cylinder is connected by links 12 to the base 1. When the crane is under load oil is displaced into an auxiliary cylinder 13 against the resistance of a plunger 21 loaded by an adjustable spring 15, and this plunger is arranged to actuate indicator mechanism and to operate an electric bell or signal lamp, steam whistle or other alarm. The cylinder 13 is made as a detachable unit to be used with main cylinders 10 of different effective diameters according to the maximum safe loading of the crane. The spring 15 may be adjusted by a collar 24 and nut 25 on the auxiliary piston-rod 14. A bar 16 carried at the upper end of the piston-rod 14 operates a switch controlling an electric bell or warning lamp when the displacement of the plunger reaches that corresponding to safe loading. In a modification, Fig. 4, a fluid-pressure gauge 30 is connected directly with the main cylinder 10 and the pointer closes a bell circuit through a contact 32 on the dial. The dial, or the contact 32, may be adjustable. As shown, the dial is moved to bring the contact 32 nearer to the pointer when the jib comes to a small radius, by means of links 33 operated by a spring-pressed plunger 34 engaged by the jib. According to the second Provisional Specification the dial, pointer, and associated contacts may be enclosed in a transparent cover which is sealed to prevent tampering.
