[Class 143] A portable weighing-machine for locomotives and other rail vehicles comprises a loose carrying member or horns portion 3 adapted to rest on the top surface of the rail, and a separate base member 1 with weighing levers 4, 5 and dial 6, adapted to be supported (for example by toes 26) on the carrying member, the carrying member being adjustable to suit different sizes of rails or diameters of wheels. The carrying member has hooks 18 taking over the top of the rail and one or both of the hooks may be adjustable to vary the distance apart in order to accommodate wheels of different sizes. To accommodate rails of various sizes and to bring the transverse portion of the carrying member into an horizontal position adjusting screws 22 abutting against the web of the rail are provided. In using the machine, the carrying member is first hooked over the rail and the toes 26 of the base member are placed on the carrying member with a stop 10 abutting against the wheel 8 as shown. This brings the knife-edge 7 of the lever 4 correctly beneath the wheel rim. A nut 15 is now rotated to withdraw the stop 10 and at the same time to raise the bearing block 12 of the fulcrum knife-edge 12A thus lifting the wheel off the rail and transferring its pressure through the second lever 5 to the indicating dial 6. To prevent derangement of the weighing parts during transportation, a bell-crank lever 28 actuated by rotation of the nut 15 presses upon the lever 4 when the machine is in the non - weighing condition.
