Abstract

515,342. Weighing-apparatus. AVERY, Ltd., W. & T., and BINNS, A. June 22, 1938, No. 18498. [Class 143] Relates to a method and means for testing weighing - apparatus in situ, more particularly applicable to testing weighing - apparatus used for indicating the load upon the wheels or axles of a locomotive or other vehicle, and comprises a fixed means permanently located in a part of the site and to which the apparatus under test can be traversed, and a force-applying means directly or indirectly anchored to said fixed means and adapted to apply a load simultaneously to an accurately calibrated instrument and to the apparatus under test, said force-applying means preferably being in the form of a screw or a hydraulic ram. As shown, a-plurality of bolts 6 are anchored in a pit at the locomotive testing site and support a screw jack 8 by means of a girder framework 7. The weighing-apparatus 3 under test may be run along the rails 5 to a position beneath the jack. A calibrated weighing- apparatus 9 is interposed between the weighing platform 3a and the foot 8a of the jack. Pressure is applied and comparison of the two dials 3b, 9b is made. In a modification, the bolts 6 are mounted on the platform 3a and a downward pressure is applied by a jack and is measured by a calibrated steelyard apparatus.
