Abstract
364,743. Friction clutches. DOUGLAS MOTORS, Ltd., Hanham Road, and DOUGLAS, J., Woodstock, both in Kingswood, Bristol. Nov. 7, 1930, No. 33511. [Class 80 (ii).] One element of a plate clutch, particularly for motor cycles, is made of aluminium or other light metal or alloy and is provided with non-circular cork or other non-metallic inserts. In the twoelement flywheel clutch shown in Fig. 1, which resembles that described in Specification 349,190, the spring-pressed aluminium &c. disc 5 is relieved at 9 for attachment to a driven sleeve 7, and two or more concentric rows of staggered or radially-aligned apertures 11 are provided therein, preferably by a die-casting process, the cork &c. inserts 12 being retained by doubly tapering the apertures as shown. By allowing the inserts to project on the side remote from the driving-flange 2, the disc may be reversed after wear. The disc 5 may be formed from a pressing. The apertures 11 are closely spaced and may be truncated sectors, triangles with vertices alternately inwards and outwards, or of other shape. In the three-element clutch shown in Fig. 3, the clutch springs 6 act on a presser-plate 16 guided by pins 17 and released by a thrust bearing 19 and sleeve 18, the inserts 12 projecting on both sides of the intermediate driven disc 5, the rectangular apertures wherein are arranged in a single row and need not be tapered.
