Abstract

362,952. Hydraulic transmission of power. SALERNI, P. M., 23, Carlton House Terrace, London. June 10, 1930, Nos. 17864/30, 18098/30, 18924/30, 24949/30, 27931/30, 27932/30, 32052/30, and 10597/31. [Class 69 (ii).] In hydraulic power transmission apparatus of the F÷ttinger type, the tips of the leading ends of the impeller and/or turbine vanes are at such an angle as to be parallel or approximately parallel to the direction of flow relatively thereto, so as to avoid impact losses and thus enable the turbine torque to differ from the impeller torque. The angle may be such, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, as to enable power to be transmitted at a range of low torque ratios approximating 1 to 1, or, as shown in Fig. 8, to enable transmission to be effected at a range of high torque ratios, e.g. from 1À5 to 1 to 4 to 1. Such a transmitter may be associated with mechanical or other gearing, for obtaining reverse drive or another ratio for forward drive, and may be used in the power transmission mechanism described in Specification 361,281. The form shown in Fig. 9 has two hydraulic circuits, the outer having vanes A, B for the low ratio transmission, 'and the inner having vanes C, D for high ratio transmission; a valve E is provided by means of which either or both circuits may be closed.- A third circuit also controlled by the valve may be provided for reverse drive. According to the sixth Provisional Specification, the valve may be slidable on balls or rollers. A single transmitter may be provided with a third element G, Fig. 11, carrying vanes G<1> and normally free to rotate ; when the element G is held by a brake G<4> the drive is reversed. In order to facilitate manufacture, the vanes may be carried by separate members or shells a<1>, a<2>, b<1>, b<2>, Fig. 12, and the assembled parts held by bolts a<3>, b<3>. The vanes and other parts in contact with the liquid may be treated to produce a smooth surface, and when made of soft material, such as aluminium or alloys thereof, they may be plated with chromium.
