Abstract
414,654. Hydromechanical variablespeed gearing. YOXALL, J., York House, Deganwy, Carnarvonshire. Feb. 4, 1933, No. 3479. [Class 80 (ii).] Variable -speed gearing comprises a planetary train controlled by a screw propeller. The driving-element is a flywheel 12, Fig. 2, which carries stepped planet gears 7, 6, 5 and also a casing 17 with vanes 2 fixed therein at an angle, as shown ir Fig. 4. The gears 7 mesh with a sun gear 18 fast on a driven shaft 10 The gears 5 mesh with a sun gear 3 fast on the loose boss of the screw propeller A. In the form shown, the propeller blades 1 are of inclination which is adjustable through a rack 24 and sliding collar 13. At low speed of the casing 17, there is no drive and the propeller A turns backwards. As power is applied to accelerate the flywheel 12, the propeller meets more resistance as fluid is passing the blades 1 in the form of a wave between pockets in the casing 17. The driven shaft 10 therefore accelerates in the forward direction and the speed is controlled by sliding the collar 13. The planets 6 mesh with a sun gear 9 fast on a sleeve 19 which carries a splined brake cone 14. When the collar 13 is slid to the extreme right, after feathering the blades 1 it strikes the cone 14 and carries the latter into engagement with a fixed cone 15 to effect a mechanical reversed drive of the shaft 10. In a modification, the propeller blades are of fixed inclination and there is a slipping friction clutch between the propeller and the sun gear corresponding to the gear 3 of Fig. 2.
