Abstract
360,728. Internal-combustion engine locomotives. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AKT.-GES., 7, Stadtbac,hstrasse, Augsburg,. Germany. Dec. 22, 1930, No. 38599. Convention date, Jan. 17. [Class 79 (i).] Comprises a locomotive having two or more internalcombustion engines, some of which, during normal running, drive the locomotive wheels directly, and others indirectly, wherein only the indirectly-acting engine or engines is or are supercharged. The indirectlyacting engine may drive the locomotive through any desired transmission means, as, e.g. toothed gearing, electric or pneumatic transmission. In the construction shown a two-stroke-cycle engine g drives the wheel axles i directly, and the other engine a drives an air-compressor b supplying compressed air to expansion cylinders f driving the axles. The upper ends bl of the compressor cylinders deliver air to'the cylinders f through a pipe 6 and a heater e heated by the exhaust gases in the exhaust pipe d of the main or indirectlyacting engine a. The lower ends b<2> of the cylinders b deliverair through a pipe l to the engine a either for scavenging, in the case of a two-stroke cycle, or for charging, in the case of a four-stroke cycle. The engine a is supercharged by throttling the exhaust at m. The exhaust air from the air cylinder passes to a receiver j supplying scavenging or charging air to the direct-acting cylinders g. A relief valve n connects the receiver j to the pipe l so that if the pressure in the receiver becomes excessive air can pass into the pipe l through the valve.
