Abstract

358,731. Jib cranes. COWANS, SHELDON, & CO., Ltd., St. Nicholas Works, Carlisle, and PEARSON, J. B., Warwick Bank, near Carlisle. Oct. 14, 1930, No. 30696. [Class 78 (iv).] The jib of a level luffing crane is luffed by a power-driven eccentric pinion engaging a rack in the lower end of the jib, the rack being so arranged that the velocity of the jib is a maximum when it is substantially at a mean radius and a minimum at when a minimum or maximum radius. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the jib 1, pivoted at 2, has two bifurcated ends 7, formed by balance weights 6, 6, and in each is incorporated a rack 3 which meshes with one of two pinions 4 disposed one on each side of the jib and interconnected by a shaft 4a. Differential gearing may be incorporated in the shafting connecting the pinions so that the load is shared equally between them.
