Abstract
356,422. Rotary and rocking furnaces. WIRGES, K., 296, Kalker Hauptstrasse, Kalk, Cologne, Germany. Aug. 8, 1930, No. 23816. Convention date, Aug. 8, 1929. [Class 51 (ii).] In a rotary or oscillating melting furnace mixing of the charge is facilitated by making the furnace of elliptical cross section, so that the charge is alternately spread out over a large area and gathered together into a deep pool. The furnace may be rotated continuously, or rocked through an angle of 90‹ or turned completely over through 180‹. The furnace is fired by a low-pressure coal dust burner at one end, and the charging openings c are in the peripheral wall when the furnace is not rotated continuously. The tapping opening d may be arranged in either of the positions shown relatively to the charging openings. The furnace axis may be at an angle to the axis of rotation so that the charge is moved to and fro axially during rotation.
