Charging and discharging.-A gas-fired shaft kiln for burning lime &c. comprises a magazine or hopper 3, which automatically keeps the kiln proper filled with material, downwardlydirected gas inlet ports 14, a waste gas outlet 9 situated immediately beneath the lower end of the magazine 3, and a rotary cone device 16 projecting into the discharge hopper 15. The kiln shaft is slightly constricted above the level of the gas ports 14.
