Device for preheating and calcining granular and lumpy matls., using a vertical preheating and calcining shaft in a heat-exchanger and means for the feeding and removal of matl. and gas, has the shaft provided with a ring-shaped cross-section with a tapered lower portion, and inside the annular cavity, is a hollow ring-shaped distributor open on its bottom surface and fitted with gas ducts on its upper surface; below the shaft is a ring-shaped deflector baffle provided on its upper surface with a second distributor projecting upwards into the tapered portion of the shaft; the ring-shaped deflector baffle is located in a ring-shaped dosing chamber fitted with separate outlets leading e.g. to a calcining furnace; and a branched loading duct is fitted on top of the shaft. Used e.g. for calcining cement or limestone with high output at low cost.
