Abstract
231,139. Fuller Lehigh Co., (Assignees of Fuller. J. W.). March 19, 1924, [Convention date]. Pulverulent-fuel furnaces. - To allow fuel of low volatile content to be used in rotary furnaces and kilns, particularly cement kilns, the discharge end 4 of the kiln is arranged to project into a combustion chamber 5 supplied with a jet of pulverulent fuel through a vertically disposed burner 18 so that the flame &c. takes an indirect path to the kiln entrance. The air supply for combustion enters through an aperture 17 surrounding the burner, ports in the wall 11 of the chamber 5 and an inlet 12, the latter being so arranged that the entering air is heated by contact with the hot material 8 which on discharge from the kiln 4 slides by gravity down the inclined floor 7 of the chamber 5 to a trough 9. The air supply ports are controlled by sliding valves 19, 15, 16 and 13 respectively. A modification is described in which the inclined floor 7 is replaced by an endless conveyer and additional burners, arranged one on each side of the burner 18 and supplied, if desired, with fuel of high volatile content, are arranged to project horizontally through the wall 11 of the chamber 5.
