Abstract

Textile yarns or fabrics consisting wholly or partly of organic derivatives of cellulose, such as cellulose acetate or other organic esters of cellulose, or ethyl cellulose or other cellulose ethers, are delustered by applying to them one or more ethanolamines and afterwards subjecting the materials to the action of a hot aqueous medium. The best results are obtained with triethanolamine, but di- or mono-ethanolamine may also be employed, particularly in admixture with triethanolamine. The subsequent treatment may comprise treatment with superheated steam at normal or excess pressure. The ethanolamine may be applied locally in the form of a paste thickened with starch or British gum, to which dyestuffs may be added to obtain coloured delustered patterns on a lustrous ground. In examples, a fabric consisting wholly of cellulose acetate yarns is (1) padded with a solution of triethanolamine or (2) printed with a paste containing triethanolamine, corn starch thickener, and British gum, with or without glycerine; in each case the fabric is subjected to the action of steam under pressure without intermediate drying. The process is applicable to mixed materials containing organic derivatives of cellulose in association with other fabrics, e.g. cotton, natural silk, reconstituted cellulose and wool.
