Abstract
351,747. Pencil holders. JEFFREYS, R. W., 42, Herongate Road, Wanstead, and CANNON, F., 125, Ardgowan Road, Catford, both in London. July 4, 1930, No. 20328. [Class 146 (iii).] In a screw-propelling pencil of the kind in which the lead or crayon is inserted in a carrier 1, as shown in the Figure, slidable, under the influence of a spring 4 and a lead-extruding rod 3 which engages with a helical track 6, along a slotted guide-tube 9 stationarily mounted in the point section 14 of the pencil, the carrier 1 is provided with an enlargement 2 which is arrested in its travel by an internal abutment 17 in the guide-tube 9 while the leadextruding rod 3 advances further, and the point-section 14 is provided with a nose 15 which is detachable to expose the carrier 1, but which only functions when attached to resist lateral pressure exerted upon the lead. A slotted tube 16, adapted to slide in the guide-tube 9, contains the spring 4 and the rod 3, the latter having a cranked end 5 adapted to protrude through the slotted tube 16 and guidetube 9 to engage with the helical track strip 6. The helical strip 6 is clamped intermediate of its ends within a split sleeve 7 and is rotatable between an abutment 8 on the guide-tube 9 and a washer 10 which is seated upon an inturned rim 11 of the sleeve 7 and is also in contact with a sleeve 12 fixed to the guide-tube 9. The sleeve 7 is frictionally held in the main case section 13 of the pencil and the sleeve 12 is similarly held in the section 14 so that one can be rotated in relation to the other. When the case-parts 13, 14 are rotated relatively to one another the cranked end 5 of the leadextruding rod 3 rides in the track 6 and the carrier 1, 2 is either propelled or retracted. Continued rotation to retract the lead causes the cranked end 5 to ride off the extreme end of the track 6 and re-enter it by forcing a path between the end of the strip and the abutment 8, this action causing a clicking noise to denote the end of the travel of the rod 3. A similar action takes place at the other end of the helical track 6.
