Abstract

350,666. Driving and steering motor vehicles. SMITH, T. P., 89, Grange Road, Erdington, Birmingham. April 29, 1930, No. 13144. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii).] Comprises the combination, in vehicles having six or more road wheels, of front and rear wheels, intermediate primary driving wheels, and brakes arranged on all the wheels, the wheels being mounted on fixed axes and the steering being effected by braking the inside wheels. In the construction shown the engine e drives the middle wheels c and rear wheels b through shafts f and differential gears d, g, and the front wheels a are driven through side chains h. All the wheels are provided with brakes (not shown) which may be operated by fluid supplied through pipes i. When rounding a curve the inside wheels are all braked and steering is effected by regulating the brakes. According to the Provisional Specification the front and rear wheels may be steerable, steering being effected by steering these wheels and applying brakes to the inside driving wheels.
