Abstract

350,617. Valves. HOLMES, F. J., 14160, Forrer Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. March 28, 1930, No. 9966. [Class 7 (vi).] A rotary valve, comprising a central exhaust conduit 22 surrounded by an annular inlet passage 29, is provided at the cylinder ports with packing blocks 10 guided by detachable flanged sleeves 9 secured in the cylinder head and supporting plate springs 20 pressing the blocks against the valve. The blocks 10 enter circumferential grooves formed around the valve, these grooves being also fitted with segmental packing rings 45, Fig. 6, pressed on to the valve by corrugated plate springs 58. The plate springs 20 may be assisted by oil pressure admitted at 16, or cylinder pressure. Between adjacent cylinders, the valve is formed with a port communicating with the supply of combustible mixture, this port receiving a packing block similar to the blocks 10, which enters another groove formed around the valve and fitted with packing segments 45.
