Abstract

348,984. Cycle driving-transmissions. BOEUF, M. and RUDELLI, C., 6, Avenue du Prado, Marseilles, France. Sept. 9, 1930, No. 26966. [Class 136 (ii).] Variable-speed gearing for bicycles, of the type in which the driving-chain is moved laterally to engage sprocket pinions of different sizes, comprises two chain guiding and tensioning pinions 8, 9 mounted between two plates 6, 7, which prevent the chain from leaving the pinions. The plate 6 is provided with a tube 5 telescoping into a tube 2, which is fixed, as by nuts 3, to a support 1 on the cycle frame, the chain being shifted bylateral movement of the plates 6, 7 and pinions 8, 9, which is effected in one direction by means of a Bowden wire 11 &c. connected to a hand-lever, and in the other direction by a spring 10. The tension of the chain is maintained by means of a tension spring 13 acting on the pinion carrier 6, 7. In the event of the chain becoming clogged with mud, undue oscillation of the pinion-carrier 6, 7 may be prevented by engaging a projection 14 with a slot 15 in the support 1. The lower pinion 9 may have truncated teeth.
