Abstract

476,369. Motor attachments for pedal cycles &c. HARRISON, C. H. May 14, 1937, No. 13619. [Class 79 (iii)] A self-contained power unit for a pedal cycle or like vehicle comprises a carrier member 1 supporting an engine 2 together with petrol tank 19 and accessories and a friction wheel 14 driven by the engine, the carrier member being suspended by links 6, 7, from two points of the cycle &c. frame in a position alongside a road wheel with the friction wheel disposed adjacent to the road wheel periphery so as to be brought into or out of engagement therewith bv movement of the carrier in relation to the frame. A spring 22 between an extension 24 of the link 7 and a lug 23 on the carrier draws the friction wheel into engagement disengagement being effected by raising the carrier by means of a handle 20 forming an extension of the link 6 or by a cable &c. The engine drives the friction wheel through a chain 16, a reduction gear, if required, being housed within the friction wheel. The exhaust may be discharged into a silencing chamber formed by a dished plate 4 with outlet apertures 5. A series of bolt holes 25, 26, enables the device to be fitted to various sizes of frame, &c. The attachment may be to the lower frame member 29. The friction wheel may be made of cotton. In a modification, plate members formed integrally with the engine replace the separate carrier plate 1.
