Abstract

673,382. Motor-assisted cycles. BENTLEY, C. March 28, 1951 [Dec. 28, 1949], No. 33145/49. Class 79(ii) In a bicycle motor attachment of the kind in which the tyre is frictionally driven from a roller, the roller is driven through an epicyclic gear of reversible character. A normal 3-speed hub gear may be utilised as shown. Drive is transmitted from the engine 1, crankshaft 2 (on which the friction roller 3 is loosely mounted), chain sprockets 5, 6 to the 3-speed hub 4 which is modified to make it into a 2-speed reversible gear, whereby the engine may be started by pedalling, through chain sprockets 7, 8 to the friction roller 3. The chain and sprocket drives may be replaced by gear trains or by V-belts and pulleys. Alternatively, the modified epicyclic change-speed gear may be mounted on the engine crankshaft and the friction roller arranged concentrically around it.
