729,256. Disintegrator apparatus. ACRES (WILLINGTON), Ltd., CLAYTON, F. W., FRYER, F., and LEESE, F. Feb. 22, 1954 [Feb. 21, 1953], No. 4914/53. Class 59. [Also in Group XXII] Disintegrator apparatus for foundry sand comprises a power-driven rotor at ground level at the front end of the machine, the rotor having flexible arms 51 carrying flexible pulverizer blades 50 which are adapted to pick up the sand from the floor as the machine advances and throw it against a screen 55 through which it is delivered while solid particles, e.g. metal fragments, intercepted by the screen are delivered into a detachable hopper 56. The screen, which consists of a frame, Fig. 5 (not shown), having a series of parallel wires strained across it by coiled springs, has associated with it an adjustable baffle 54 which deflects on to the floor sand thrown through the screen. The blades 50 may be wholly or partly of rubber, and the arms 51 of rubber, spring steel, or rubber reinforced with metal. In the form shown, the rotor spindle 15 is driven from a pulley 14 on the main shaft of an engine or motor 11 and the drive to the spindle 15 is taken up or disengaged by a hand-controlled jockey pulley 17. The apparatus is provided with ground wheels 12 which are driven from the pulley 14 by means including a friction wheel 25, chain and sprocket drive, a clutch and clutch shaft 30, and friction rollers 31. This drive assembly is mounted in side plates 35 pivotally attached at 36 to the frame of the apparatus and is operable by a lever mechanism 37 and links 38 to disengage the clutch shaft 30 and move the friction wheel 25, which is-pivotally mounted in side plates 40 on the clutch shaft 30, out of engagement with the pulley 14. A hand-propelled machine may be provided if it is not desired to drive the ground wheels. The apparatus may be driven by an external power source, e.g. the power take-off on a tractor, the power unit and driving gear to the rotor spindle being omitted, or a power unit and rotor could be built up for mounting on existing trucks or other vehicles.
