348,749. Softening water. ELEY, T. W., Bergholt, Ardleigh Green Road, Hornchurch, Essex. March 1, 1930, No. 6804. [Class 46.] In apparatus for softening water by base-exchange the bed of reagent is arranged so that the water after passing through part of the bed in one direction turns backward through another part. As shown, part of the reagent is packed within an inner cylinder 7 and part in a space 6 between the cylinder 7 and an outer casing 1. The hard water is supplied through an open-ended coil 10 to an upper chamber 5 and from thence through a perforated diaphragm 8 and wire gauze 9 into the cylinder 7. It flows downward in the cylinder, through perforations 7a into the space 6, and then upward to an outlet strainer 12 and a valve 14, which has connections to a delivery pipe and to waste.
