[Class 46] In a filter having fine granular filtering- material M, Fig. 1, in a perforated inner casing d, so that at least some of liquid supplied through an upper inlet b<1> or lateral inlets i passes into the filtering-material laterally, the space between the inner casing d and the outer casing a is filled with granite chippings G or like irregular coarse material. A perforated cylinder l, which encloses perforated tubes through which the filtrate is discharged, may also contain granite chippings. The tubes may be used for admitting a cleaning flow of steam, air or water, or additional pipes n may be provided for this purpose. An annular baffle j directs downwards the liquid entering through the inlets i. The bed of filtering-material may be divided by one or more vertical partitions k. Fig. 4 shows apparatus having a horizontal cylindrical outer casing, with filtering-medium confined by perforated partitions q leaving outer spaces ql which are filled with granite chippings. A longitudinal baffle y<1> directs liquid entering through a side inlet y downwards. A similar baffle may be provided at the opposite side of the filter, the two being connected by a pipe y<2>. Fig. 4 shows two such elements in a single outer casing, spaced apart by partitions r, to the space within which the liquid for treatment is admitted through an inlet v.
