Abstract
299,648. Handley, A. C. Jan. 20, 1928. Separating by gravity; filters with loose filtering-materials; purifying liquids.-Apparatus for separating oil and water or other liquids of different specific gravities comprises a separating chamber, with an outlet for lighter liquid, which can be raised or lowered, in the same casing with a filter through which the heavier liquid passes. The separator chamber A is fitted with vertical baffles a, a', and inclined baffles a<2> as shown. The mixed liquids are supplied through a pipe a<7> behind the baffle a. The lighter liquid collects in the chamber A and is discharged through a pipe a<8>, pivoted so that its upper, inlet, end can be adjusted by elevating and lowering gear operated by a handwheel a<11>. The heavier liquid passing under the baffle a' is filtered through coir fibre or cellulose artificial silk b<1> packed between sheets b of expanded metal. The central filter section may contain sand or fibre dust with or without outer layers of coconut matting. The purified heavier liquid is discharged through a pipe d, adjustable in the same manner as the pipe a<8>. A steam inlet cock E and drain cock F are provided for cleaning purposes.
