Abstract

In the purification of anhydrous aluminium chloride containing iron compounds by converting the aluminium chloride into a liquid aluminium chloride-phosgene compound, separating the latter from undissolved ferric chloride and recovering aluminium chloride by evaporating the phosgene, the material is treated with an oxidizing agent, preferably chlorine, during or after the phosgene treatment. The ferric chloride present is preferably reduced to ferrous chloride, as by means of iron or aluminium, prior to or during the treatment with phosgene, and ferric chloride then reformed and precipitated by chlorine, whereby the recovery of aluminium chloride is rendered more complete. The phosgene may be employed in the liquid state under pressure, or gaseous phosgene be used.
