Abstract

In the production of sodium nitrate from nitrous gases and sodium chloride, the nitrate solution obtained by absorbing the residual gases of a nitric acid plant in a soda solution is converted with ammonium carbonate to ammonium nitrate and a soda solution for re-use by the use of base-exchanging substances, the ammonium nitrate is treated with lime or limestone to obtain a calcium nitrate solution, and the latter converted with sodium chloride to sodium nitrate by the use of base-exchanging substances in the manner described in Specification 407,311. Ammonia evolved in the last step but one is converted to carbonate for re-use in the preceding step, whilst the calcium nitrate solution may be concentrated for use in the last step by using it in the nitric acid absorption plant when the nitric acid obtained is to be converted to calcium nitrate. Sea water or other suitable naturally occurring solution may be used to provide sodium chloride for the last step of the process.
