Abstract

A cyclic process for the purification of impure calcium-containing brine comprises: (i) treating the impure brine with a brine which contains NH4CO3 whereby CaCO3 is precipitated and removed; (ii) evaporating water from the brine to precipitate NaCl which is recovered; (iii) treating the residual brine with Ca(OH)2 whereby CaSO4 is precipitated and removed; (iv) treating the resultant brine with CO2 to produce an ammonium carbonate-containing brine for use in a further cycle of the process. Prior to step (i) the impure brine, which may contain CaHCO3 and Mg salts as impurity, may be treated with Ca(OH)2 to precipitate CaCO3 and Mg(OH)2. In step (iii) the amount of Ca(OH)2 added is preferably substantially equivalent to the (NH4)2SO4 present in the brine. In step (iv) the brine may be divided into two parts, preferably equal, one part being saturated with CO2 to form NH4HCO3 in the brine, which is mixed with the other part whereby NH4HCO3 is converted to NH4CO3. The process of the invention yields a brine containing less than 0.015% by weight Ca.++
