Abstract
In the extraction of silver and manganese from refractory ores containing them, a suspension of the ground ore in water is treated with sulphur dioxide to bring the manganese into solution as sulphate and dithionate, and the residue is then treated with a thiosulphate solution to extract the silver, and copper if present, the silver with or without copper being finally precipitated for instance as sulphide. The solution containing manganese is evaporated to dryness and calcined to convert the dithionate to sulphate, the sulphur dioxide evolved being returned to the first step of the process. Calcium thiosulphate solution is preferably used to extract the silver, which is then precipitated by calcium sulphide containing thiosulphate obtained by boiling a suspension of lime in water, so that after precipitation the concentration of thiosulphate in the remaining solution, which may be treated with sulphur dioxide to remove residual calcium sulphide before re-use, is maintained. The silver precipitate may be roasted to provide sulphur dioxide for use in the first step of the process. In commencing operations, sodium thiosulphate may be used to extract the silver, whilst according to the Provisional Specification it may be used continuously and its concentration be maintained by using, to precipitate the silver, sodium sulphide containing thiosulphate obtained by boiling soda ash with sulphur.
