Abstract

Precious metal ores or concentrates in which the precious metals are associated with arsenic or sulphur or iron in the form of arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, magnetite &c., are mixed with an alkali carbonate or nitrate, and heated without the addition of carbon under non-roasting conditions at 950--1250 DEG F. for a sufficient time to form polysulphides and sulph-arsenates. The mass is quenched with water, when the polysulphides and sulpharsenates react with the precious metals to form soluble salts thereof. The solution formed is removed and the precious metals recovered by precipitation, and the residual ore pulp is treated with cyanide or similar extracting solution, preferably after being treated with lime and filtered.
