Abstract
Solutions obtained in the treatment of ores by the cyanide process to extract their metal values, are treated with zinc sulphate while being maintained alkaline, a zinc cyanide precipitate and a cyanide free solution resulting. Alternatively, the cyanide solutions may be treated in the usual manner for the recovery of metal values, the residual cyanide liquors being treated as described above. Valuable metals, such as gold and part of the silver may be recovered from the cyanide free solutions by precipitation on metallic zinc preferably after the solutions have been rendered acid. The zinc cyanide precipitate which may contain the remainder of the silver and all the copper may be treated with an acid such as sulphuric acid to recover hydrocyanic acid and zinc sulphate for re-use, the valuable metals being recovered from the insoluble residue. In processes where the cyanide liquor is used cyclically, a portion of the liquor may be diverted and decyanided by the addition of zinc sulphate preferably at a point in the cycle after the normal precipitation of the gold and silver by the aid of zinc or the like, the cyanide free liquor after removal of its metal values by precipitation on metallic zinc being returned to the cycle if desired.ALSO:Solutions obtained in the treatment of ores by the cyanide process to extract their metal values, are treated with zinc sulphate while being maintained alkaline, a zinc cyanide precipitate and a cyanide free solution resulting.
