Abstract
Lead is extracted from ores by first converting it to sulphate, leaching the product with a chloride solution, and continuously precipitating the lead from the resulting solution on a metal such as iron. The process may be combined with the recovery in successive stages of the various metals contained in complex ores. In a process for the treatment of sulphide ores containing copper, zinc, lead, silver, and gold, the ores are crushed, roasted, and leached with sulphuric acid to recover copper aud zinc, the solution of these metals being electrolyzed or otherwise treated for the recovery of the metals. The residues after the removal of the copper and zinc are treated with hot sodium chloride solution, the solution of lead chloride being continuously drawn off and precipitated on iron or other metal preferably in the form of dust. The ferrous chloride solution formed is used with or without sodium chloride as a solvent for further lead sulphate. The residues from the extraction of the lead are treated with cyanide for the extraction of gold and silver, the metals being precipitated from the cyanide solution on zinc dust. Silver may be recovered along with the lead by roasting the ore so as to convert both the lead and silver to sulphates, leaching with chloride, and precipitating with iron. The extraction of the zinc and copper from the complex ores may be effected as described in Specification 26138/13, [Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.].
