Abstract

Silica is eliminated from an alkaline borate solution, for instance a borax solution obtained from an ore such as rasorite, by adding an iron salt such as ferrous or ferric sulphate, the silica being precipitated as an iron silicate. The purified solution may be freed of organic matter by addition of a permanganate, and after boiling and separation of manganese hydroxide, be cooled and granulated. According to the Provisional Specification, silica is eliminated from alkaline solutions in general by the process of the invention.
