Abstract

346,567. Scooters. ETTEN, W. V. VAN, Bellingham, Whatcom, Washington, U.S.A. April 9, 1930, No. 11283. [Classes 136 (i), 136 (ii), and 136 (iii).] To increase stability, a scooter is provided on one side with a readily detachable supplementary supporting wheel. An additional rear wheel 28 is detachably secured to the scooter by means of a bar 24 having its looped rear end slotted to engage the axle 12 of the rear wheel 13, and its front end formed with a bayonet slot to engage a headed stud 29 on the frame bar 5. The scooter is propelled by the action of one foot on a pedal plate 22 on a lever 17, which is pivoted to the frame at 18 and is provided with a toothed segment 19 gearing with a pinion 14 adapted to drive the rear wheel 13 through a spring-pressed pawl 15 on the downstroke of the lever 17, the upstroke being effected by means of a coiled torsion spring 21. The lever 17 is guided by a pivoted loop member 20, which also acts as a stop. The other foot rests on a plate 23. A brake acting on the tyre of the rear wheel 13 comprises a wheel or roller 31 on a lever 32, which is pivoted at 34 and is connected by a rod 37 to a pedal lever 35 pivoted on the same axis 18 as the lever 17.
