[Class 12 (ii).] Single or multiple engines may be partly cut off by putting one or more valves out of action by means of angularly-movable tappets. The cam-operated lever u, Fig. 8, operates the valve stem f through a piston e and stem e<1> mounted in a rotatable guide g. The lever n acts upon a hardened piece e<2> bearing upon changeable shims mounted in the piston e which slides in a chamber q. The guide may be rotated to the dotted position by means of a lever H to put the valve out of action. In order to facilitate the use of the swinging tappets, the main valves are returned by fluid-pressure instead of springs. The fluid is cut off to bring the tappets into action. The oil in the cam box communicates with the chamber q and is kept at a higher position than the lowest position of the piston e. The piston and rod are provided with ports and a ball-valve, and the lower part of the chamber q acts as a pump to effect the lubrication of the piston and to prevent leakage along the stem e<1>.
