554,641. Emergency gear for damaged engines. ONIONS, J. W.,PAXMAN, E. P., and DAVEY, PAXMAN & CO., Ltd. April 9, 1942, No. 4659. [Class 7 (ii)] Emergency gear for damaged engines having one or more cylinders rendered inoperative comprises a two-part balance weight for attachment to the crank pin of an inoperative cylinder after the connecting-rod bearing has been removed, and a telescopic push-rod adapted to replace the usual valve push-rods of the inoperative cylinder to ensure that the valves remain closed. Fig. 4 shows an emergency push-rod comprising a pin m sliding in one end of a sleeve l against the pressure of a spring p, the other end of the sleeve having a cup i for engaging the overhead valve rocker, so that the pin m merely reciprocates in the sleeve without opening the valve. The fuel-supply pipe to the inoperative cylinder may also be disconnected from the injector and directed to a receptacle, or connected to another pipe leading back to the tank.
